Biofeedback

What Is Biofeedback?
Biofeedback is a supportive approach that helps you understand what is happening inside your body and learn how to guide it toward a calmer, more balanced state. Using small sensors, biofeedback allows you to see and hear what your body is doing in real time—including breathing, heart rhythm, muscle tension, and stress levels.
This real-time feedback makes it easier to notice how your body responds to thoughts, emotions, and daily stress. With practice, you can learn how to gently shift those responses—helping your body move out of “fight or flight” and into a more relaxed, steady state. Biofeedback is basically letting you use technology to train your physiology.
Is there an assessment? What is a psychophysiological profile?
A psychophysiological assessment measures how your body responds to stress, emotions, and focus in real time. It records indicators such as heart rate variability (HRV), breathing patterns, muscle tension, skin conductance, and sometimes brainwave activity to evaluate how your nervous system is functioning.
This assessment makes biofeedback more precise and effective by identifying specific patterns—like chronic tension, overactive stress responses, or inefficient breathing. Treatment is then tailored to target those patterns, allowing progress to be tracked objectively and training to be focused, personalized, and results-driven.
How Biofeedback Sessions Work?
During a session, comfortable sensors are placed on the skin to track body signals. This information is shared through visual displays and calming sounds or music, so you can watch and listen as your body responds moment by moment. With the guidance of your clinician, you’ll practice simple skills such as slower breathing, relaxation, and focused attention while observing these changes as they happen.
Over time, your brain learns these calmer patterns. Many people find they can use these skills outside of sessions—at home, at work, or during stressful moments—to feel more grounded, focused, and in control. Biofeedback helps strengthen your natural ability to bounce back from stress.
How Biofeedback Can Help
Biofeedback is often included as part of a larger treatment plan and may be helpful for people experiencing:
-
Anxiety and ongoing stress
-
Trauma-related symptoms, including PTSD
-
Headaches, migraines, and chronic pain
-
Sleep difficulties and insomnia
-
Focus and attention challenges, including ADHD
-
Stress-related digestive concerns
-
High blood pressure
-
Performance stress (work, school, public speaking, athletics)
-
Raynaud's syndrome
-
Migraines
Biofeedback is supported by research and can be used alongside therapy, medication, and other forms of care. It teaches practical skills you can return to again and again—helping your mind and body feel safer, steadier, and more at ease.
